چکیده

This chapter will focus on the first two questions. The last question is equally important — of course we need to know the best way to make predictions, perform diagnoses and make strategic decisions — but in the absence of a well-entrenched mathematical calculus of causality, the answers given to the last question tend to depend on the answers provided to the first two questions. Standard responses to the first, ontological question are surveyed in §2, while the second, epistemological question is dealt with in §3. I advocate a position I call epistemic causality which is sketched in §4, and which is compared to the positions of Judea Pearl in §5 and Huw Price in §6.1

Probabilistic Theories of Causality

This chapter provides an overview of a range of probabilistic theories of causality, including those of Reichenbach, Good and Suppes, and the contemporary causal net approach. It discusses two key problems for probabilistic accounts: counterexamples to these theories and their failure to account for the relationship between causality and mechanisms. It is argued that to overcome the problems, a...

Mechanistic Theories of Causality

After introducing a range of mechanistic theories of causality and some of the problems they face, I argue that while there is a decisive case against a purely mechanistic analysis, a viable theory of causality must incorporate mechanisms as an ingredient. I describe one way of providing an analysis of causality which reaps the rewards of the mechanistic approach without succumbing to its pitfa...

? Evidence and Epistemic Causality ?

The epistemic theory of causality maintains that causality is an epistemic relation, so that causality is taken to be a feature of the way a subject reasons about the world rather than a non-epistemological feature of the world. In this paper, we take the opportunity to briefly rehearse some arguments in favour of the epistemic theory of causality, and then present a version of the theory devel...
